The Situation

A unique situation arose in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where monkey populations indigenous to the province’s rural areas increasingly shifted habitats to suburban environments. Using the existing FTTH cable infrastructure as transport routes, these primates caused significant damage and attenuation failure to the cable infrastructure.

The Challenge

FTTH drop cable is traditionally designed for short distance customer connections within a controlled environment.

In some instances, wildlife can impact this controlled environment, and the additional weight of the monkeys added significant strain on the cable.

This resulted in loss of internet connection performance and a potential for further cable failure.

Our Solution

YOA Cable’s R & D ream re-engineered the FTTH drop cable whilst maintaining the original cable functionality. This ensured that not only did the cable retain its smaller diameter but it was lightweight and more flexible.
